Lewes, Delaware Real Estate

More recent history extends back to World War II when Fort Miles was constructed, in 1941, just south of Lewes on what is known as Cape Henlopen. The distinction here is this area was the single-most largest and heavily fortified and armed coastal defense complex ever built in the US. Fort Miles had the responsibility of protecting Philadelphia, Delaware Bay and the various oil refineries along the Delaware River near Wilmington and Philadelphia. Fortunately this installation never saw any action during the war and was officially closed in the early 1990s. You will find a fascinating mixture of real estate opportunities for either permanent residence or summer vacation resort style living. During the summer months, quite a few visitors and vacationers make their way to Lewes from points north and south including Washington DC and Baltimore Maryland. This area is unique in that there is a harbor, and technically speaking it is not an ocean beach resort even though most people consider it to be one. Lewes is just about at the line of demarcation between the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Lewes and the surrounding area have a tremendous amount to offer for families and those who are single. All along the "main drag," which is Second Street, you and your family can enjoy restaurants, museums, various boutiques and shops and a lot more. If you go there, be sure to visit Fisherman's Wharf which is a section of Lewes along the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal. You will get a real taste of old-time fishing activities during the summer as the dock is filled with fishing boats numbering in the hundreds. Plus of course if you love seafood, there is an ample supply of restaurants to choose from. You will find a lot more in Lewes and the nearby areas, and this little town has terrific real estate of all kinds which are perfect for any family or single person.
